FAQs
Do I need a sewing machine to sew these kits?
Absolutely not! You can use a sewing machine if you have one but all of the Butterscotch Sewing kits can also be sewn by hand. The videos that go along with each kit will walk through the steps using either hand sewing or a sewing machine.
Do I need to have prior sewing experience to sew these kits?
Nope on a rope! The videos will walk you through every step as if you have never sewn before. There is also a Sewing 101 video that will walk through some sewing basics before you start sewing your kit. If you are using your sewing machine you will need to know how to thread your machine and wind a bobbin.
There are a few different styles of kits. The “Jr.” doll kits and Tote kits are a bit simpler of a design and offer more of an entry level experience with fewer steps to work through.
How do the kits work exactly?
Each kit comes with all of the patterns and supplies you will need (you bring the scissors or add on a pair of scissors to your cart) along with a QR code and link to access video tutorials for your specific kit. The videos are broken out into steps so there are easy places to stop and take a break. The kits will take some time and shouldn’t be expected to be completed in a single sitting.
Can kids sew these kits?
You betcha! There are different age recommendations for different kits - there are kits for kids as young as 8(some adult support may be needed during some of the steps).
Keep in mind the needles and pins that are included with all of the kits are real so they will be sharp and adult supervision may be needed.
Does the kit come with everything I need to sew?
Almost! The kit comes with all of the supplies you will need to sew - you just need a good pair of scissors to cut the fabric and clip threads as you sew and access to either a tablet, computer or phone with internet access to watch the accompanying video lessons.
*If you have The Activist or The Activist Jr. doll kit you will also need an iron to press on the iron on transfers for your doll’s shirt and sign.*
How long will the kit take to complete?
That depends on a few different things but I can tell you that the videos are broken out into individual steps so if you don’t have a ton of time to sew one day you can just watch one of the videos and complete the sewing for that step. If you have more time you can make your way through multiple videos.
These kits are designed to take a little while though - it definitely isn’t the type of project that can be completed in an hour. The idea is that by the end of the kit you will have a ton of sewing basics under your belt.
What is the difference between the “Sewing Kits” and the “Junior Sewing Kits”?
Both kits include all of the supplies needed to complete the doll along with access to video tutorials. The Junior kit is a bit simpler of a style doll (there aren’t any legs or arms to sew). If you are looking for more of an entry level kit then the “Junior” kits are the way to go.
